The idea

Percent means out of one hundred. A percentage can be written as a fraction with denominator one hundred or as a decimal. To find that percentage of an amount, multiply the amount by the corresponding fraction or decimal.

Before you begin: Understand simple fractions and multiply or divide whole numbers.

Worked example

Find twenty-five percent of eighty.

25⁢% of 80
Total: 802020202025%4 equal quarters
25% is one quarter. Split 80 into four equal parts: each part is 20.
Step 1

Rewrite the percentage as a fraction and simplify. Twenty-five out of one hundred is one quarter.

25⁢%=25100=14=0.25
Step 2

One quarter of eighty is found by dividing eighty into four equal groups.

80÷4=20
Step 3

Multiplying by the equivalent decimal gives the same answer.

0.25×80=20

A mistake to avoid

Twenty-five percent is 0.25, not 25. Always identify the whole amount before finding its percentage.

Your turn.

Find ten percent first, then double it.

20⁢% of 150
Show the solution
10⁢% of 150=15,
20⁢% of 150=30

Ten percent is one tenth. Twenty percent is twice that amount.
