Example 1
A:B=2:3 and B:C=2:3. Together A,B and C contain 38 counters. How many counters are in C?
Show worked answer
Answer: 18
Match B in the two ratios: A:B:C=4:6:9.
There are 19 parts, each worth 2, giving C=18.
Example 2
Red:blue counters start in the ratio 3:4. Remove 3 red and 6 blue counters. The remaining red:blue ratio is 24:31. How many counters were there originally?
Show worked answer
Answer: 119
Write the counts as 3k and 4k.
Then 4k−63k−3=3124;
k=17
the total is 119.
