Foundations through variables on both sides
12 equations and worded problems. 20 minutes; feedback at the end.
Example 1
x+14=29
Show worked answer
Answer: 15
- Subtract 14 from both sides: x=15.
- Check in the original equation: 1×(15)+14=29.
Example 2
A fair charges $15.00 entry and $6.00 per ride. Mia spends $153.00 in total. How many rides does she take?
Show worked answer
Answer: 23
- Let x be the number of rides.
- Entry + ride costs gives 15+6x=153.
- Subtract 15:6x=138.
- Divide by 6:x=23.
- Check: $15.00+23× $6.00= $153.00.
Example 3
3x=42
Show worked answer
Answer: 14

- Check in the original equation: 3×(14)=42.
