Multi-step equations

Undo several operations while keeping both sides of an equation equal.

01 / LEARN

The idea, step by step

What solving means

A solution makes the original statement true. An equation is balanced, so adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing must be applied to both sides. Division is permitted only by a non-zero number.

Collect like terms on one side first. Then undo addition or subtraction outside the unknown term, before undoing its multiplication or division.

Show equivalent statements

Write one balanced change per line so another person can follow your argument. Do not round a fraction just because you expected a whole-number answer.

Finish by substituting into the original equation. This checks the result without repeating the same rearrangement.

A common trap

Changing a term sign without a balanced operation.

Instead: State what you do to both sides; subtracting 7 explains why a +7 disappears.

02 / WORKED EXAMPLES

See the thinking

Example 1

Undo two operations

Solve 4⁢x+7=31.

  1. Subtract 7: 4⁢x=24.
  2. Divide by 4: x=6.
  3. Check 4⁢(6)+7=31.
x=6.
Example 2

Collect terms first

Solve 5⁢x+8−2⁢x=20.

  1. Combine the x terms: 3⁢x+8=20.
  2. Subtract 8, then divide by 3.
  3. Check 5⁢(4)+8−2⁢(4)=20.
x=4.

Check your understanding

Solve 3⁢x−5=16.

Show answer

x=7.

Add 5 to get 3⁢x=21, then divide by 3.
