Time-zone differences

Convert local clock readings using given UTC offsets, including half-hour differences.

01 / LEARN

The idea, step by step

Use a common reference

A UTC offset tells how far a local clock is ahead of or behind UTC. A town at UTC+8 reads 8 hours later than UTC; a town at UTC−5 reads 5 hours earlier. Convert from local time to UTC by subtracting its offset, then from UTC to the destination by adding the new offset.

Use the offsets supplied in the question. This avoids needing to know a real city’s daylight-saving rules. An offset such as +9:30 means 9 hours 30 minutes; it is not 9.30 decimal hours.

destination time=origin time+destination offset−origin offset

Compare offsets first

For a direct conversion from UTC+8 to UTC+9:30, the destination clock is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead. Add that difference. Moving the other way means subtracting 1 hour 30 minutes. When one offset is negative, calculate the full gap across UTC: from −5 to +2 is 7 hours.

After changing the clock, check whether you have crossed midnight. Keep the day with the time if it changes. A useful check is to reverse the conversion and recover the original reading.

A common trap

UTC+9:30 minus UTC+8 equals 1 hour 70 minutes.

Instead: Treat hours and minutes separately. 9 h 30 min−8 h=1 h 30 min; 60 minutes make one hour.

02 / WORKED EXAMPLES

See the thinking

Example 1

A half-hour difference

At a town using UTC+8, the time is 14:20. What time is it simultaneously in a town using UTC+9:30?

  1. The second clock is 1 h 30 min ahead: 9 h 30 min−8 h=1 h 30 min.
  2. 14:20+1 h 30 min=15:50.
15:50.
Example 2

Across UTC

At a town using UTC−5, it is 08:40. Find the simultaneous time at UTC+2.

  1. The offset difference is +2−(−5)=7 h.
  2. Add 7 h to 08:40.
15:40.

Check your understanding

A clock at UTC+3 shows 16:10. What does a clock at UTC+1 show?

Show answer

14:10.

The destination is 2 hours behind, so subtract 2 hours.

  1. UTC+2 shows 09:15. Find the simultaneous time at UTC+5.
    2 marks

The destination is 3 h ahead.

    12:15.
  2. UTC+9:30 shows 17:20. Find the simultaneous time at UTC+8.
    2 marks

    Subtract 1 h 30 min.

    15:50.
  3. UTC−4 shows 11:35. Find the simultaneous time at UTC+1.
    2 marks

    The gap is 1−(−4)=5 h.

    16:35.
  4. UTC+10 shows 20:10. Find the simultaneous time at UTC−2.
    2 marks

    The destination is 12 h behind: 20:10−12 h=08:10.

    08:10.
  5. UTC+5:30 shows 13:45. Find UTC.
    2 marks

    Subtract 5 h 30 min.

    08:15.
  6. A student converts 10:00 at UTC+8 to UTC+9:30 and gets 11:30. Reverse the conversion to check.
    2 marks

The clock difference is 1 h 30 min in each direction.

    11:30−1 h 30 min=10:00, so the answer is correct.
