Understanding am and pm

Use am and pm to identify the part of a day.

01 / LEARN

The idea, step by step

A clock time appears twice

The hour hand goes around a 12-hour clock twice in a day. The letters am identify times from midnight up to noon. The letters pm identify times from noon up to midnight. A time such as 7:30 needs context or am/pm to tell us which part of the day it means.

The two special times

Noon is 12 pm, usually lunchtime. Midnight is 12 am and starts a new day. After 11:59 am comes 12:00 pm. For an important plan, writing “noon” or “midnight” can be clearer than the number 12 alone.

Parts of a day
TimeExample
7:00 amMorning breakfast
12:00 pmNoon
7:00 pmEvening meal
12:00 amMidnight

A common trap

Calling noon 12 am.

Instead: Noon is 12 pm. Midnight is 12 am.
