Connect visual growth, decimal sequences and fraction patterns with their rules.
Example 1
Start at 1.5 and repeatedly add 0.5. The sequence begins 1.5,2,2.5,3. What is the next number?
Show worked answer
Answer: 3.5
The stated rule adds 0.5 each time.
3+0.5=3.5.
Example 2
The pattern adds one separate triangle at each stage. Triangles touch only at corners and share no sides. Stage 1 uses 3 sticks, stage 2 uses 6 and stage 3 uses 9. How many sticks are needed at stage 6?
Growing triangle patternShow worked answer
Answer: 18
Each triangle has 3 sides and no sides are shared.
Multiply the stage number by 3:6×3=18.
Example 3
A pattern starts at 32 and adds 31 each time: 32,1,34,35. What comes next? Give an exact fraction or whole number.
Show worked answer
Answer: 2
