YEAR 9 · QUADRATICS & PARABOLAS

Topic review.

Start with a standard paper. Try the applications paper when the core skills feel secure.

QUICK RECAP

Connect the ideas

Expanding. Multiply every term in one bracket by every term in the other: (x+2)⁢(x+3)=x2+5⁢x+6.

Factorising. Find two numbers with the required product and sum. Expand your brackets to check.

Solving. First write the equation with zero on one side. If (x−2)⁢(x+3)=0, then x=2 or x=−3.

Graphs. Intercepts show where a curve crosses an axis. A parabola has a line of symmetry through its turning point. Use a smooth curve when graphing a quadratic.

Applications. Define your variable, include units, and check which answers make sense in the situation.
