Shapes around us

Notice familiar shapes in everyday objects and designs.

01 / LEARN

The idea, step by step

Look at a face or outline

Everyday objects can show familiar shapes. A book's front face often looks like a rectangle.

The whole book is a solid object. Its flat front face can be described using a flat shape.

Explain what you see

A shape name needs a reason. Say that a sign looks triangular because its outline has three straight sides.

Objects and pictures may be turned. Look at the sides, corners and curves instead of which way they point.

A common trap

A box is a square because one face looks square.

Instead: A box is a solid object. One of its flat faces may be a square.

02 / WORKED EXAMPLES

See the thinking

Example 1

A clock face

A clock has a flat round face with no corners. What shape does the face look like?

  1. Look only at the face.
  2. It has a curved boundary and no corners.
A circle.
Example 2

A book cover

A book cover has four square corners. Two sides are long and two are shorter. What familiar shape fits?

  1. There are four straight sides and four square corners.
  2. A rectangle does not need all four sides equal.
A rectangle.

Check your understanding

A sign's outline has three straight sides and three corners. What shape is the outline?

Show answer

A triangle.

The side and corner counts identify it.
