The idea, step by step
Roots and factors
If is a root of a polynomial , then is a factor. A quadratic with leading coefficient and roots factors as .
Do not reverse the signs inconsistently: the factor for root is . Substitution of the root into its own factor gives zero and is a quick check.
Real quadratics can split over the complex numbers
A real quadratic with negative discriminant cannot be factored into real linear factors, but it does split into conjugate complex factors. For example, .
Expanding the proposed factors checks every coefficient. Keep any original leading coefficient outside the factors; roots alone do not determine it. This stage uses Cartesian form, not polar roots-of-unity techniques.
A common trap
Writing .
Instead: That product is . The required factors use roots : .

Factor a shifted quadratic
Factor into linear factors over the complex numbers.
- Complete the square: .
- The roots are and .
- Form a factor for each root.
- Multiply the conjugate factors to recover .
Keep a leading coefficient
Factor over the complex numbers.
- Write the polynomial as .
- Its roots are .
- The factorisation must retain the multiplier .
- The product inside is .
Check your understanding
Factor over the complex numbers.
Show answer
