One-to-one functions

Decide whether different inputs can produce the same output.

01 / LEARN

The idea, step by step

An inverse must be single-valued

A one-to-one function never assigns the same output to distinct inputs. Its graph passes the horizontal-line test. This condition concerns outputs, unlike the vertical-line test, which decides whether a relation is a function at all.

To disprove injectivity, give two allowed different inputs with the same image. One pair is enough. To prove injectivity algebraically, start with f(a)=f(b) and derive a=b.

The domain controls injectivity

A parabola fails the test on all real inputs but becomes one-to-one when restricted to either side of its vertex. State the actual interval, including any endpoint.

A reciprocal can be injective even though its domain is disconnected. What matters is whether branches share y-values, not whether the graph is one connected curve.

A common trap

Confusing the horizontal and vertical line tests.

Instead: A function can pass the vertical test and still fail to be one-to-one.

02 / WORKED EXAMPLES

See the thinking

Example 1

A failed test

Is f⁡(x)=x2 one-to-one on the real numbers? Justify your answer.

  1. Use f⁡(2)=f⁡(−2)=4 even though the inputs differ.
No.
Example 2

An algebraic proof

Is f⁡(x)=1⁢/⁢x, x≠0, one-to-one?

  1. If 1⁢/⁢a=1⁢/⁢b for nonzero a,b, multiplying by ab gives a=b.
  2. Its separated branches do not share any y-value.
Yes.

Check your understanding

Is ∣⁢x⁢∣ one-to-one on all real inputs?

Show answer

No.

For example, -2 and 2 both give 2.

  1. Is f⁡(x)=x2 one-to-one on the real numbers? Justify your answer.
    2 marks

Use f⁡(2)=f⁡(−2)=4 even though the inputs differ.

    No.
  2. Show f⁡(x)=3⁢x−7 is one-to-one on the real numbers.
    3 marks

    If 3⁢a−7=3⁢b−7, then 3⁢a=3⁢b and a=b.

    It is one-to-one.
  3. Is f⁡(x)=1⁢/⁢x, x≠0, one-to-one?
    3 marks

If 1⁢/⁢a=1⁢/⁢b for nonzero a,b, multiplying by ab gives a=b.

Its separated branches do not share any y-value.

    Yes.
  4. Find two distinct inputs with the same output for f⁡(x)=x3−3⁢x.
    3 marks

    x3−3⁢x=x⁢(x2−3).

    Use two different roots.

    0 and 3 both give 0.
  5. Give two maximal intervals on which f⁡(x)=(x−2)2 is one-to-one.
    3 marks

The graph is strictly decreasing on the first interval and increasing on the second.

Each restriction passes the horizontal-line test.

    (−∞,2] and [2,∞).
  6. Explain why f⁡(x)=2x has at most one input for each output.
    2 marks

For a<b, raising a base greater than 1 to these powers gives 2a<2b.

A horizontal line meets its graph at most once.

    It is strictly increasing.
